William Woods Golf First in Fall Invitational After Day 1
FULTON, MO -- The William Woods University women's golf team currently sits comfortably in first place at the 2012 WWU Fall Invitational, posting a team score of 307 (+19) through the opening 18. Lindsey Johnson holds the individual lead after a 74 (+2), with Alex Ferrer ending the day one shot off the pace with a 75 (+3). The Owls' Green team is 22 shots clear of the White team and holds a comfortable 65-shot margin on third-place Columbia College.
Myriam Hassan carded a 77 (+5) on the afternoon to hold on to third spot on the individual leaderboard, with Naomi Starr rounding out the team score for the squad with an 81 (+9). Jodie Peacock finishing in a tie for 11th with an 85 (+13).
Alyson Mongler leads the WWU White team, firing a 78 (+6) to finish the first day tied for fourth. The Owls posted a score of 329 for their second squad, with Jamie Palermo posting an 82 (+10) in her first competitive round of the season. Palermo sits tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard, with Taylor Vick tied for ninth, two shots behind with an 84 (+12). Joni Purvis rounded out the team scoring for the White team, with her 85 (+13) good for 11th and a team total of 329 (+41). Lacee Floyd also posted a 100 (+28) for the White team.
The Owls have three players competing as individuals in the tournament as well. Valerie Mielziner finished 13th on the afternoon with an 87 (+15), while Cassie Kennedy posted a 90 (+18) for 15th on the individual leaderboard. Kelli Mulligan opened the tournament with a 96 (+24).
A 9 a.m. shotgun start awaits the five-team field on Tuesday, as William Woods looks to claim its second championship of the fall season.
Just 10 shots separate the top three teams after the opening round of the 2012 WWU Fall Invitational, with the William Woods University men's golf team holding down the top spot after an opening-round 286 (-2). Julian Taylor (York, England) led the Owls with a 68 (-4), but he is tied for second and chasing tournament leader Kirby Brown of St. Xavier, who shot a 65 (-7) to open proceedings. St. Xavier sits nine shots back in second after a 295 (+7), with Central Methodist in third after an opening-day 296 (+8).
Marty Sanchez also finished the opening round under par for the WWU Green team, firing a 71 (-1) for a fifth-place tie. Chris Martin posted a 73 (+1) for the opening 18, good for a seventh-place tie. Chris Reinert rounded out the team score with a 74 (+2), with Shane Kressig posting a 77 (+5) on the day.
The Owls also entered a second team in the tournament, led by Cruz Buchanan with a 74 (+2). The WWU White squad posted a team mark of 306 (+18). Alex Stear posted a 75 (+3) for the White squad, good for a 13th-place tie.
Cody Hackman carded a 76 (+4) for the White squad, with Tyler Daly and Dillon Klein each posting an 81 (+9) to round out the team score.
Although he is competing as an individual, Andrew Davis is in the top 10, carding a 73 (+1) for a seventh-place tie. Also competing as individuals for the Owls are Tim Jordan (Marceline, Mo.) and Tyler Hamilton. Jordan posted an 81 (+9) on the day, with Hamilton carding an 86 (+14).
The Owls wrap up tournament action on Tuesday, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at Tanglewood Public Golf Course.
