Witness: Driver High Before Southeast Mo. Crash
CAPE GIRARDEAU (AP) - The co-worker of a southeast Missouri truck driver charged with killing a 17-year-old girl in an April crash says the driver had smoked marijuana several times while on the job that day.
Thirty-four-year-old Bobby Joe Abernathy is charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree assault in connection with the April 5 death of Amelia Fisher of Glenallen.
The Southeast Missourian reports that Eric Smith testified in a preliminary hearing Friday that Abernathy was using drugs shortly before their Slumberland Furniture box truck crossed the Missouri Route 34 center line near Burfordville in Cape Girardeau County.
The county coroner testified that Fisher, an SUV passenger, died from a broken neck in the head-on collision.
