Workers Restore Vandalized Historic Graveyard
City workers in Cape Girardeau get some help this week restoring a historic cemetery that was vandalized in October. The workers are repairing and restoring grave markers at Old Lorimier Cemetery, which was founded in 1808. They learned some new techniques from gravestone restorer John Maurath of St. Louis, who brought a portable generator, cleaners and glues designed for stonework. Last month, vandals toppled 69 headstones at the city's oldest cemetery. Damage is estimated at up to $60,000. Private donors have pledged to pay for repairs and a reward for information leading to the vandals' conviction.
