WWU Women's Golf Sweeps First, Second at Fall Invite
FULTON, MO -- Despite a tough second round, Alex Ferrer held on to claim the individual title and lead the William Woods University women's golf team to the team crown at the WWU Fall Invitational. Ferrer posted a 153 (75-78; +9) for the tournament, moving up from a second-place day one finish. The Owls took four of the five all-tournament team spots, with Lorena Alvarez from Hannibal-LaGrange University the only non-WWU player in the top five, as she finished in a three-way tie for second with a 154 (78-76; +10).
Lindsey Johnson and Myriam Hassan were the other two members of the second-place deadlock, with Johnson following up an opening round 74 with an 80. Hassan was consistent through the two rounds, posting identical 77s. Naomi Starr rounded out the WWU Green squad with a 162 (81-81; +18), good for an eighth-place tie.
Jamie Palermo moved up to finish sixth in the tournament, closing out action with a 160 (82-78; +16). Alyson Mongler, Joni Purvis and Taylor Vick rounded out the scoring for the WWU White squad, finishing in 10th, 11th and 12th respectively. Mongler finally righted her slide, posting a 168 (78-90; +24), while Purvis finished with a 169 (85-84; +25) and Vick posted a 170 (84-86; +26).
Lacee Floyd finished with a 192 (100-92; +48).
Leading the individual charge for WWU was Valerie Mielziner, finishing in 13th with a 174 (87-87; +30). Cassie Kennedy posted a 176 (90-86; +32) for 14th, while Kelli Mulligan finished tied for 17th after a 186 (96-90; +42).
The WWU women's golf team will close out its fall schedule at a tournament to be determined. The Owls lost a tournament due to the remnants of Hurricane Isaac earlier this year.
