MILWAUKEE – The Cardinals had no answer for the reigning MVP Monday against Milwaukee, as Christian Yelich led the Brewers to a 10-7 win.

The Cards jumped on Brewers starter Freddy Peralta early and hard. Paul Goldschmidt pounded the first pitch he saw 443 feet to put the Redbirds up 1-0. Not to be outdone, Paul DeJong crushed a 462 foot homer just two pitches later. The lead would be short-lived.

Ex-Royal Mike Moustakas led off the bottom half of the second with a homer of his own, cutting the lead to one. Milwaukee would tie the game at two on a one-out single by Ben Gamel. From there the inning fell apart. The Brewers would take the lead as Tyler O’Neill was unable to get Gamel at home following a single by the pitcher Peralta. MVP Christian Yelich then broke the game open with a 3-run homer, making it 6-2.

Yadi Molina would get one back for the Cards in the third. He doubled in Goldschmidt to make it 6-3. That’s where the score would stay until the sixth.

With both teams well into their bullpens by this point, the Cardinals had the bases loaded with one out. A passed ball by Brewers catcher Yasmani Grandal, allowed Dexter Fowler to trot home. The pitch also led to a scary moment as home plate umpire Ron Kulpa was struck on the mask. He was forced to leave the game.

Now 6-4, the Cardinals would tie it up before the inning was over on Marcell Ozuna’s RBI single. Heading to the home half of the sixth, Christian Yelich answered the call yet again. His second 3-run shot of the night put Milwaukee up 9-6, and gave him six home runs against St. Louis so far this year.

Two innings later he would hit his seventh against the Redbirds and eighth overall. This one was a solo shot to left-center, making it 10-6.

Ozuna picked up a consolation run in the top of the ninth, tagging Brewers closer Josh Hader for a solo homer to make it 10-7.

The Cardinals will be back in action Tuesday at 6:40 PM as Jack Flaherty opposes Brandon Woodruff.
