JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Senate passed an amendment Thursday that would allow senators and representatives to remain in the legislature for 16 years.

Senate and House members are currently restricted to eight-year terms.  If passed, they could spend the 16-year term entirely in one chamber or split between the two chambers.

The Senate's 24-9 vote sends the measure to the House.  If the House passes the amendment, the measure will be on the 2012 ballot.

The state set the legislature's current term limits in 1992.
