HOLTS SUMMIT- The Better Business Bureau is warning mid-Missouri about a new scam, where scammers claim to represent Ameren UE.

All-Spec Metal Systems LLC received a call around 1:30 p.m. from someone stating Ameren UE would disconnect their service within the hour due to non-payment.

"At that time I told him I knew payments had been made and checks cleared," Office Manager Lori Twehus said.

Twehus called the company's local Ameren location and found out the phone call was actually a scam.

"I gave them the information and they said it is common in the St. Louis area but not locally. They indicated they would get it recorded and released to the news media but I'm not sure how long that takes and didn't want anyone to fall for it being close to a weekend and hot weather," Twehus said.

Ameren told Twehus these scams are unusual for mid-Missouri, but the BBB's mid-Missouri Regional Director Sean Spence says these kinds of scams are common all over, and can cause companies to lose billions of dollars in the process.

KOMU 8 reached out to the Ameren UE location responsible for All-Spec Metal Systems' service for comment but did not get a response.
