JEFFERSON CITY - People gathered in the state capitol rotunda Thursday to honor those who died at work in 2010.

Twenty-seven families attended the event. All of them received a full-sized American and Missouri flag, along with a proclamation from the governor honoring their loved one. The goal of the e, sponsored by the state department of labor and the AFL-CIO, is to comfort the families.

"We want to bring all the families together," Missouri Department of Labor Director Larry Rebman said. "They can get together, grieve and commemorate."

The ceremony invite came as a surprise to one invited guest.

"I was surprised to receive it in the mail," John Mier said. "I did not even know about the program but it is a great thing."

The crowd was also serenaded by Boone County Fire Protection District Pipes and Drums with "Amazing Grace." The song can bring one some powerful emotions.

"We always miss our Dad, but hearing Amazing Grace brings a tear to your eye," Mier said.

The Department of Labor hopes to soon erect a physical memorial for Missouri's fallen workers.
