Centralia Middle School girl collapses during mile run
CENTRALIA – A student from Chester Boren Middle School collapsed Friday morning while running the mile in gym class.
Boone County Fire Department spokesperson Martina Pounds said the department was dispatched to a medical call at the middle school for a girl who collapsed during the mile run. Pounds said when medics arrived, the girl was unconscious and not breathing.
Centralia School District Superintendent Darin Ford said the student collapsed around 9 a.m.
Ford said the student was taken by ambulance to a hospital and her parents were notified.
Centralia Police Chief Larry Dudgeon said the girl's mom came to the school as the ambulance was leaving. He said a friend of the mom's was able to drive her to the hospital to be with her daughter.
Dudgeon said he didn't know how the girl was doing Friday afternoon but said the whole town was hoping she'd be alright.
"The only thing we can do is pray for strength of the doctors, nurses, her family," he said. "Strength to the little girl that Monday, Tuesday, she's back at school."
The district said it would release more information when the parents tell the district.
