City Council to Decide Rezoning Issue
COLUMBIA - A controversial rezoning issue will make its second appearance before the Columbia City Council Monday night.
Owners of Great Hangups Framing made a request to rezone their property on West Broadway and West Boulevard from commercial to residential property. The proposal would change the lot from R-1 One-Family Dwelling District to C-P Planned Business District.
The city allows the shop to operate on residential property because it was grandfathered in more than 20 years ago. The city council rejected the proposal in October 2010 by a 5-2 vote.
Proposal supporters said new business would make the area more attractive. Since a business has been there for so long, they said another business would not be any different.
Sunset Lane Neighborhood Association President Cookie Hagan disagrees. She said it would cause unwanted traffic in an already busy neighborhood.
"We already have increased traffic because people take shortcuts to get to Broadway and to West Boulevard," she said. "I think it could possibly be a nightmare if it's not well planned out."
The council must approve the proposal by a supermajority, meaning five or more votes are needed to pass the request.
