City Installs More New Parking Meters
COLUMBIA - More new parking meters popped up downtown this week. The new meters are part of phase two in a pilot program to assess street parking.
The first phase began in early February when multi-space parking meters were placed on Ninth Street between Broadway and Locust. The multi-space system means downtown patrons park and walk to a hub where they can pay for their numbered spot with cash, credit and debit cards, or a system called EZ Pay. Then, the receipt is placed in the car windsheild.
The latest installations are single-space meters similar to the ones previously in place. But, instead of the traditional coin-operated model, these new meters accept credit cards, and you can even pay with your cell phone. The phase two meters are located along Ninth Street between Locust and University.
The pilot program will end in May, and the city will assess the results and make decisions about downtown parking over the summer.
