City of Columbia Cites Brookside Apartment Complex for Violations
COLUMBIA- The city has issued a citation to contractors in charge of the development of the Brookside Apartment complex near College and Walnut. The city has notified the construction company that it is in violation of certain ordinances for working around the clock.
City Manager Mike Matthes said that the police department will respond to any complaints received by residents and neighbors and that construction activities need to end at 7 p.m.
Construction workers were working past those hours so residents still displaced by a fire over the summer could move in last Thursday.
According to chapter 16 of the city ordinance, "It shall be unlawful to interfere with or disturb the peace and quiet of neighboring inhabitants by demolishing, constructing, altering or repairing any building or structure other than between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on weekdays, and between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays."
Last week the project manager said he knew the company was in violation of the city noise ordinance by continuously performing construction past 7 p.m., but the company had not received any tickets from police.
North Central Columbia Neighborhood Association President Pat Fowler sent City Manager Mike Matthes an email last week stating that she wanted additional information regarding a permit and permit compliance situation with Brookside.
The city did some investigation and found out that there was never a permit issued allowing workers to work past hours and that contractors had lied.
