COLUMBIA - Police responded to the 1600 block of Steamboat Lane, off of Rock Quarry Road, Monday morning after a neighbor called in a report of gun shots being fired.

This is the third time in three days that Columbia police officers have responded to a shots fired or shots heard incident in neighborhoods off of Rock Quarry Road. There were two calls made about shots being fired on Saturday. Those incidents occurred in the 3400 and 3500 block of Rock Quarry Road.

This is also the second time in the last month police have been called to the same block of Steamboat Lane. In the first incident, police arrested a man for first degree assault, armed criminal action, and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant after he shot another man in the hand.

The neighbor who made the 911 call Monday said a group of men were huddled in the yard behind his house and began arguing. He said one of them pulled out a hand gun and threatened the others with it. He then shot a few shots straight up into the air. The neighbor, who doesn't wanted to be named for safety reasons, said he then called police.

He said he and his roommate were unsatisfied with the lack of urgency shown by the Columbia police officers who arrived in the neighborhood.  They two men directed the police in the right direction of the house where the men who caused the disturbance went into.

As he was leaving, a police officer said there wasn't much evidence of any issues and they all left the street.

The neighbor said he and his roommate called Columbia Police twice more after they left because they were aggravated with the way the officers handled the scene.

Another neighbor who lives on a street near Steamboat Lane said it makes her nervous to hear about the situations but she does not feel unsafe.

"It makes me uncomfortable that it's so close to here but I don't feel unsafe on a daily basis," said Hannah Dougherty.

Police confirmed with KOMU 8 News they did not find any evidence of shots being fired Monday despite the report.
