EPA MAKES RECOMMENDATION FOR HINKSON CREEK
COLUMBIA (AP) - A Missouri environmental official says the state's plan for cleaning a central Missouri creek will disregard an order from the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce storm water runoff.
The EPA has ordered the state to reduce storm water runoff in Hinkson Creek.
Joe Engeln of the state Department of Natural Resources says the department's goal is to restore the biological community of the creek, regardless of how much runoff is reduced.
Missouri officials say changes can be made to the plan when new information is collected. Engeln says Missouri is using "adaptive management," which involves trying different methods to reduce runoff. A group of interested parties helps guide the cleanup.
