COLUMBIA- A handful of Columbia Police Officers are working overtime this weekend to make sure drivers are wearing seat belts.

Missouri law requires all drivers and front-seat passengers to wear seat belts. If the driver holds an intermediate driver license, all passengers in the car must wear seat belts.

The Columbia Police Department is looking to remind drivers of the law. According to CPD, seat belts are an important part of the car's safety features, and the best defense against impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent and the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50 percent.
