BOONE COUNTY - Five people went to the hospital Monday morning after a chain reaction accident.

The accident occurred at Highway 63 southbound north of Columbia, near the Dripping Springs exit.

Boone County Fire Protection District Captain Matt Stone said the injuries appeared minor, but Boone Hospital and University Hospital ambulances transported the drivers and passengers involved in the accident.

All of the victims are adults.

One car was drivable after the accident. Tow trucks removed the other two vehicles from the roadway around 9:30 a.m.

Captain Stone said units arrived within ten minutes after the call came in at 7:45 a.m.

"Conditions are horrible, " he said, "It's very slick. The roads at the time of the call were completely ice covered."

He said conditions seemed to be improving as the morning went on, but with low temperatures still lingering, drivers need to watch for refreezing.

Captain Stone said it has been a busy morning for the department.

"We've been doing this the last 36 hours," he said.

He said the ice hit the section of highway north of Hinton was particularly bad.

Captain Stone emphasized if you have to drive Monday, it is imperative to wear a seat belt.
