GASCONADE COUNTY - MoDOT closed U.S. 50 in Gasconade County Thursday afternoon due to more expected flooding in the area around Mt. Sterling.

Drivers must use U.S. 54 in Callaway County to detour around the U.S 50 closing.

Neighbors in Mt. Sterling have begun moving items out of their homes after receiving a warning call from the Osage County alert system.

A river access road filled up with more than two feet of water in a little over an hour on Thursday morning.

KOMU 8 watched as a man in the area moved items with a boat from his home to a car on the road.

MoDOT Engineer Preston Kramer told KOMU 8 News the agency has been preparing for this flood since Sunday afternoon.

"We started putting up signs, barricades and worked on the roads to prepare for the flood," Kramer said. "If it continues to rain, water levels would peak this afternoon."

Kramer said if the rain stops, it would take at least 11 hours for the water levels to go down.
