Legislative candidates join the community to learn more about issues facing Columbia\'s youth

COLUMBIA- The Youth Community Coalition is hosting its second annual Youth Issues Round tables on September 20, 2016.

Nine of the eleven Missouri state legislative candidates will be in attendance to discuss topics including prescription drug abuse, mental health resources for youth and academic achievement gaps.

This round table will give the community a chance to educate the legislative candidates on things happening in the community, pertaining to the youth.

Ron Rowe, the Youth Community Coalition Coordinator, says that this event is unique because the people get to educate the officials, not the other way around.

"It gives the people a voice, and we get a chance to stand up and speak on behalf of a group of people who don't always have their voice heard," Rowe said.

Heather Harlan, Prevention and Treatment engagement specialist at Phoenix Health Programs, says that she looks forward to the opportunity to speak candidates directly.

"We need to adjust ourselves and change our mindset on this issue and realize it is a chronic health issue," Harlan said.

The event is free and open to public, it will take place at the Hampton Inn and Suites Conference Center, 1225 Fellows Place Blvd from 6-8pm.
