JEFFERSON CITY - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. held a dance Saturday to raise money and awareness during American Heart Month.

The theme was "Pink Goes Red."

Current and graduate members came out to dance and learn tips on how to maintain a healthy heart.

Mary W. Simmons said this year's event meant more to her because of a family member affected by heart health.

"Last week, my 4-month-old granddaughter had a heart transplant in Washington, D.C." she said. "Certainly, it was very successful, and this was one day I was not going to miss."

Simmons said it's important that all age groups are aware of heart health.

"It's not all about old people," she said. "This baby was born with this heart problem."

Sylvia Wilson is also a member of the sorority. She said the event is a great way for women to get together to exercise and learn something new about better diets.

"It is one of our sorority's initiatives to serve the community by making opportunities available to get together and work on their heart health," she said.

This is the organization's seventh year putting on this event.
