COLUMBIA - The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is adding new foods to the WIC food list on Monday.

WIC is a program that provides supplemental nutrition for pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children who qualify for coverage based on economic and medical factors.

The new list includes:

  • 64 ounce ready-to-serve juice

  • Cold cereal

  • Hot cereal

  • Soy milk

  • Whole wheat and corn tortillas

  • Whole wheat pasta

  • Whole wheat bread

  • Yogurt

"These foods were evaluated based upon USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), WIC nutritional guidelines, product package sizes, shelf pricing and statewide product availability," the department said.

Deanna Davenport, a Columbia mother, said she is excited to see more healthy options.

"The healthier foods are more expensive. If there are ways for people with limited incomes to get those, that would be great," Davenport said.

She said she is still upset more options are not on the list.
