OSAGE BEACH - Memorial Day brings family and barbecues, but it also brings traffic on both land and water.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, seven boating accidents occurred last Memorial Day weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks. One of those accidents injured one person.

Fire Chief for the Osage Beach Fire Protection District, Jeffrey Dorhauer, said he hopes to keep the number of boating accidents low this weekend.

"We'd obviously like to see that seven turn into zero, but if we can keep the injuries down, the accidents are tolerable as long as people aren't being hurt by them," Dorhauer said.

Dorhauer also said the heavy traffic and stormy weather will make for choppier water.

"The majority of injuries we see that are water-based throughout the year are back injuries, because of the rough water, so make sure you are paying attention so no one gets hurt," he said.

Joseph Long said he comes down to the lake every once and a while, but he tries to avoid going out on busy holiday weekends.

"It is really hard to be out here when there are so many people, but if I am out there, I try to find areas where it's less crowded because the water is usually a little calmer over there," Long said.

Dorhauer also wants to remind those going out on boats this weekend to make sure you put a life jacket on.

"There is a law requiring it for children, but I would also recommend for everyone else to put it on, just to be extra cautious," Dorhauer said.
