COLUMBIA - Skateboard enthusiasts say there's no reason for newbies to be afraid of taking part in Saturday's Shred Fest.

"Put a helmet on you and wrap you up in some bubble wrap," said Parkside Skateshop co-owner Shane Stander.

The shop is partnering with Columbia Parks and Recreation to host the event at Columbia Skate Park in Cosmo Park from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

To celebrate "Go Skate Day," organizers have scheduled an afternoon full of events, like skills contests, raffles and prize giveaways. Plus, there will be free pizza.

All skaters of any level are welcome to participate. Organizers said skaters should wear helmets if participating.

The event is free and open to the public.
