State Audit Finds Departments Misused Federal Funds
JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich released a report Friday detailing use of federal funding by state departments.
The auditor compiles a single statewide report each year. The audit found that Missouri used $14.2 billion in federal funds during 2011. State expenditures of federal funds had increased from 2007 to 2010. In 2011, use of federal funds was down from 2010.
The audit found that the Department of Social Services' Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program misused more than $600 thousand dollar in funding. Additionally, there was a "lack of quality control" for its Child Care program.
Additionally, the audit found the Department of Labor didn't properly manage unemployment benefits which resulted in errors in benefits paid to recipients.
Nineteen state departments used federal funds in 2011, but four departments used the bulk of them. Those departments were Social Services, Labor and Industrial Relations, Transportation, and Elementary and Secondary Education.
Schweich would comment on the report to KOMU. He said he's waiting to dicusss it in a news conference on Monday.
The Department of Labor and the Department of Social Services did not return calls to KOMU.
