Textbook scam targets Missouri and Illinois

COLUMBIA - The Better Business Bureau is warning all schools nationwide of a scam targeting both private and public schools.

The caller asks for a payment of about 700 dollars in exchange for 50 paperback workbooks. However, Better Business Bureau said the school supplies are non-existent and have not been shipped to any school.

The invoice asks for the check to be written out to a company called Scholastic School Supply. This title sounds very similar to the trusted company located in New York called Scholastic Incorporated.

There is no evidence of schools in Columbia being targeted just yet however, the warnings have come as close to the Saint Louis area.

About 22 states have been complaining about this ongoing issue. BBB recommends the schools receiving these calls to only deal with trustworthy companies, write as much information down as possible during the call and to contact the local inspections office right away.
