COLUMBIA - The Columbia School Board unanimously approved a new redistricting transfer policy Thursday that is set to take effect when Battle High School opens in fall 2013. The new policy allows students who are currently in ninth grade and assigned to move to Rock Bridge or Hickman High Schools in 2013 to request to transfer to their new high school next fall instead of waiting until fall of 2013. This will allow students to spend three years at their new high school instead of two. The change could affect as many as 113 current ninth graders.
The new policy also allows siblings with students who will be seniors at Rock Bridge or Hickman High Schools in 2013-2014 to request to transfer to the same high school as their sibling. The original transfer policy only applied to sophomores and juniors and did not allow freshmen with older siblings to transfer high schools.
School board members also agreed there would be no exceptions made for athletic-related transfers. There must be an educational reason to request the transfer.
Transfer requests must be sent to the district in writing by May 1. Parents can find the form online or pick it up at any school.
