COLUMBIA -  Columbia dog owners will only have access to one of the three dog parks at Twin Lakes Recreation Center starting today. Lakeside dog park and Paws Pond dog park closed today, Monday, November 4, 2013 and will stay and will be closed until April 2014.

The parks will see new turf and tighter shorelines come Spring. Columbia Parks and Recreation Senior Planner, Matt Boehner, said, "Since opening them as dog parks we have not been able to close them, but now that we have the three areas, and the off season area we can open that up and do that work without disrupting the play of the dogs."

Parks and Recreation maintenance crews will do some slight grading and reseeding in some areas in order to allow the turf to become established. The shoreline area where the dogs jump in and out of the water is badly eroded creating a big mess for dog owners. Regrading and planting more plants along the shoreline is the work crews will have in those areas. The crews plan aerate and lay grass seed and clover seed in the next few weeks.

This project plan was proposed in October 2012 when Parks and Recreation began with the start of the Twin Lakes redevelopment plan. The first part of the plan consisted of repairing the fences surrounding the dog parks, and reconstructing the entrances into the dog parks. Boehner says this isn't the second phase of the project, just the maintenance phase.

Funding for the turf and shoreline refurbishment comes from park maintenance money. Boehner said, "At this time we really haven't established any budgets," because the Parks and Recreation Department will not know the final cost until its completion in April.
