UPDATE: MSHP identify the four who died in I-70 crash
BOONE COUNTY - The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the four people who died in a multi-vehicle crash east of Columbia on Wednesday. Three of them are from mid-Missouri and the other is from Ohio.
The crash happened when a semi truck driven by Otto Kramer rear-ended two passenger vehicles, a Buick and a Ford. The Buick then hit a second semi truck and the Ford hit a third semi truck. A fifth and sixth vehicle also got minor damage in the crash.
Kramer, 63 from Ohio, died at the hospital. Two women in the Buick died - sisters Vicky Moore, 60, and Cindy Spradlin, 63, both from Auxvasse. Moore died at the scene, Spradlin died at the hospital. Jennifer Temple, the driver of the Ford, died at the scene.
The crash immediately shut down both lanes near the Route Z exit and traffic backed up for hours before the highway was re-opened.
Boone County Fire Protection District spokesman Gale Blomenkamp said the crash was triggered by an earlier traffic backup that resulted from a vehicle fire.
Neighbors of Moore and Spradlin say their deaths have impacted the community immensely and will continue to do so. They say the sisters were heavily involved in the community. Moore and Spradlin are survived by their brother and mother.
