COLUMBIA -- Columbia College Cougar softball team dropped a doubleheader to American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe William Woods University on Friday. Columbia fell 2-1 and 6-3 to move to 15-15 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.
Marli Hayes' solo homerun in the fourth inning gave Columbia the lead, but two errors and a hit later the Owls took a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. The Cougars threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but were not able to get the tying run across the plate, falling by one run.
Jordan Crisp (8-8) took the loss on the mound, giving up just three hits and zero earned runs while fanning four. Whitni Howell pounded two of Columbia's four hits.
The second game saw 24 hits between the two teams, compared to just seven in game one. William Woods jumped on top in the bottom of the first. Kristin Eiken's solo homer in the top of the second matched the Owls score, but William Woods opened up the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second. The Owls added one more run in the fifth. The Cougars strung together three hits in the sixth to score two runs, but it wasn't enough as they fell by three.
Nine different Cougars had hits in the contest, including two by Alex Ridenhour. Taylor Richter (7-5) took the loss on the mound. Crisp relieved Richter in the second and Maria Imhoff (0-2) took over in the fourth inning. The trio combined for six strikeouts, including four by Imhoff.
