William Woods Wins First Tournament Game
MONTGOMERY, AL - The William Woods University baseball team opened play in the 2011 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round with a 7-1 victory over Huntington University (Ind.). The tournament is taking place on the campus of Auburn University-Montgomery.
The Owls trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning. WWU scored three runs to take a lead they would never surrender. WWU tacked-on four more runs in the eighth to secure its first victory at the National Tournament.
Freshman Matt Thomas (Brashear, Mo.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI's. Sophomore Jacob Harrison (Fulton, Mo.), freshman Derek Fletcher (Moberly, Mo.) and senior L.J. Watson (O'Fallon, Ill.) each recorded two hits in the victory. Junior Blake Wilson (Cairo, Mo.) added a pair of RBI's for the Owls.
Senior Logan Lawson (Jackson, Mo.) earned a complete-game victory for the Owls. Lawson (6-5) worked nine innings, allowed six hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out eight.
Number five seed Huntington (22-24) scored one run on six hits and committed three errors in the loss. Number four seed WWU (35-16) scored seven runs on 10 hits. With the victory, William Woods ties a school record for wins in a season.
The Owls return to action tonight. They play top-seed and 6th-ranked LSU-Shreveport (42-13) at 6 pm.
WWU is making its first trip to the NAIA National Tournament. The Owls finished the regular season 30-16 overall and 17-7 in the AMC. It was the third consecutive year the Owls have reached the 30-win mark. They have won 30 or more games four times in Head Coach Darren Munns' six years at the helm. 17 wins also set a new school record for AMC victories.
