Winter weather preparations begin

COLUMBIA - People are gearing up for winter just in time for Halloween this year.

People have been out purchasing sidewalk salt and shovels for the coming forecast. Jeff Kendall General Manager at Westlake Ace Hardware says it also has included many other essentials if winter weather gets bad.

"Ice scrapers, gloves, hats, just being prepared," he said. "There's still a lot of aerial lines out there that could still come down so make sure people have alternative heaters. Just be careful."

This cold fall season has people out early this year as snow is forecasted for Wednesday night. The KOMU 8 First Alert weather team is only expecting a dusting on grassy surfaces, but they say some may stick to windshields due to temperatures in the middle 20s Halloween morning.

People are ready for possible icy conditions tomorrow.

"They're coming in, we've sold several snow shovels, and a lot of ice melt to both contractors and our customers," Kendall said. "Just to be prepared if it does happen."

And the store was ready for those early customers.

"Usually we try to be ready by about the first of November so were right on time to start getting everything in," Kendall said.

He believes this year is going to be a busy one for them.

"We have a feeling there's going to be a lot more salt being sold," Kendall said. "Just my gut feeling is, it's going to be a long winter."
